We are soooo good at knowing when we didn’t follow our intuition — “ugh, I knew it!” – and then we end up beating ourselves up for it.
Let’s talk about that voice inside you that always seems to know.
About 7 years ago, I was hosting an adult summer camp retreat weekend (think bunk beds, yoga on the dock, and personal development) it was a super fun event. For the retreat, I brought on a photographer to capture all of the activities, but “I knew” it wasn’t the best idea to bring her on board. I didn’t know why, but I just had a feeling.
I chose to do what we’ve all done at one time or another, I ignored the knowing and brought her on board anyways. Well, the night before camp…she bailed. Thankfully, I had brought on backup photographers!
However, I spent more of my time coming down on myself for NOT listening to my intuition when I could have been focused on how I actually did listen to my intuition. I mean, I could have said no to that photographer from the beginning, but still – I had backup. That was intuitive.
You are being guided every single day, all the time, by your intuition. Sometimes you listen and sometimes you don’t. Most of it is happening without your conscious awareness.
Imagine how much easier and more fun your life would be if you could always turn to your intuition to ask for guidance, and know that you would receive help.
Exciting news: you can!
About 3 years ago, I found myself at the grocery store and grabbed a drink from the cooler near the checkout. As soon as I got it in my hand, I dropped it. Then I picked it up again and dropped it again. And then — a third time. Now, I’m not a particularly clumsy person, so this felt really out of the norm to me.
This is something most people would have ignored or thought nothing of, but I had a knowing that there was a message in this situation. My intuition was trying to speak to me during this moment, but I didn’t understand the language my intuition was speaking.
Your intuition, just like mine, speaks to you in its own language. It’s kind of like if you were out in a busy place and there were a bunch of conversations going on around you — and one of them was happening in a foreign language. Your brain would filter out that conversation because you wouldn’t understand it anyway.
Well, our brain is filtering out the communication from our intuition because it seems like it’s a foreign language.
But when you learn the language of your intuition (which, trust me, is easier than learning an actual new language), you open yourself up to more and more guidance.
Guidance that’s far beyond the knowing:
- Signs and synchronicities
- Some people hear a soft voice (which often sounds like your own thoughts, but they drop in instead of you generating them)
- You may feel sensations in your body
- You may see imagery in your mind
Once you start tuning in, your intuition starts getting really chatty in ways you’ve never noticed before.
We all know that intuition is a thing, but most people haven’t explored it at length. The more you explore and learn the language that your intuition speaks to you, the easier your life gets.
Because when you have a personal guide leading you in every decision that comes your way (let’s be clear, you’re not outsourcing here — this is part of you), you are able to make decisions knowing that you’ve made the right one.
Life starts to get lighter, and you end up with a sense of freedom in knowing that everything is working out for you.
So, where do you start?
A daily practice. Just like you would learn a language through practice, you learn the language of your intuition through practice — but all you need is 5 minutes a day. It doesn’t need to be a huge investment of time.
I mean — I give it more time, but that’s because I’m obsessed with this, and it’s so much fun for me. But 5 minutes is all it takes to get to know your intuition.
Here’s an exercise to get started with, think of it like you’re giving your intuition a megaphone.
- Grab a piece of paper and a pen
- Set a timer for 5 minutes
- And ask yourself:
What is in my highest good to know today?
Just let your pen start writing. Let your hand move faster than your brain. Don’t judge what you’re writing down. Trust that whatever comes through your pen will make sense to you later.
Now, it may be clear guidance — but it may also be metaphorical guidance. Trust that even if it doesn’t make sense in this moment, it will make sense to you in the next couple of days.
You already have all the wisdom and guidance you could possibly need, why not have fun with it?
